What is Accelerated Reader?
Accelerated Reader is a testing and management system that gives immediate feedback on comprehension and reading performance. It accommodates all readers, monitors progress, and allows students to set individualized reading goals.
What is a ZPD?
Students take the STAR reading test three times a year and are given a ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development). This zone is a range in which your student will be successful when reading. You might hear this called your child's reading level. In the library, we call them just-right books.
How do students participate?
Students will choose a book, read it, then take a quiz. All quizzes are multiple choice and are taken on the computer at school. Quizzes cannot be taken at home. [UPDATE: Quizzes can now be taken at home. Click here to log in!]
The number of questions will be 5, 10, or 20 depending on the length and difficulty level of the book. It is a quick check to see if students understood what they just read.
Is this book AR?
This is the last question you should ask! Students are free to read any book that interests them. Checkout from the school library will always be free choice in accordance with The Library Bill of Rights. Allowing students to choose what they read increases motivation and enthusiasm. However, most books have an AR quiz. Use AR BookFinder to see if your child is reading an AR book.
How do I check my student's progress?
Accelerated Reader also monitors the progress of students by giving all stakeholders information about how many books are being read and how well they comprehend what has been read. You can access this information any time using AR Home Connect.
Where can I find out more?
Parent's Guides are provided in English and Spanish for Accelerated Reader, AR BookFinder, and AR Home Connect on the right side of this page.
