Reading Curriculum

At High Plains Elementary, we use HMH Into Reading as our core reading resource. This READ Act–approved, structured literacy curriculum offers award-winning texts that connect to science, social studies, and the arts. It helps students build knowledge while practicing reading, writing, and discussion skills. Because it is research-based and aligned with the latest early literacy training, it strengthens foundational skills and supports all learners on their journey to becoming confident, lifelong readers.

Mathematics Program

We use Eureka Math, a high-quality program designed to help all students build deep, lasting math understanding. Eureka Math is thoughtfully crafted like a story, with concepts that connect and build on one another from grade to grade. This coherence allows students to develop a strong foundation and see how mathematical ideas fit together over time. Instead of learning isolated skills, students gain a complete body of math knowledge and use consistent models and problem-solving strategies each year. This approach ensures that math concepts stick with them, supporting both confidence and success in mathematics.

Student Support and Intervention

We are committed to ensuring that every student receives the support they need to grow as a learner. Our Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) process begins with universal screening three times a year using DIBELS 8 and NWEA MAP assessments. These assessments help us identify each child’s strengths and areas for growth.

Based on the results, students are placed into WIN (What I Need) groups that provide targeted instruction ranging from intervention to enrichment. Our dedicated Reading Intervention Team works closely with classroom teachers to deliver research-based strategies and individualized support, ensuring that all learners are challenged and supported at their level.

Advanced Learners

Advanced learners receive support through small-group instruction with a full-time TAG teacher and collaboration with classroom teachers. Third graders complete a universal screening to identify students for Talented and Gifted (TAG) services.

Identified students work with teachers and families to create an Advanced Learning Plan (ALP) with academic and social-emotional goals. All advanced learners, whether formally identified or not, have access to enrichment and challenging instruction to support their growth.

Supplemental Learning Resources

At High Plains Elementary, we also use IXL as a supplemental resource to support learning in both reading and math. IXL provides students with personalized practice that adapts to their individual needs, giving them the opportunity to strengthen skills they are learning in the classroom and challenge themselves with new concepts.

With engaging, interactive questions and immediate feedback, IXL helps students build confidence, track their own progress, and celebrate growth. This tool is another way we ensure that every student has the support they need to succeed.

Specials and Enrichment

High Plains is proud to offer Science, Music, Art, and Physical Education as part of our engaging, standards-based specials that support the whole child.

  • In Science, lessons are taught using the Carolina Science curriculum along with other resources to provide hands-on activities that make learning meaningful and relevant. Students investigate, experiment, and discover the world around them while building curiosity and critical thinking skills.
  • Art, Music, and Physical Education give students opportunities to grow creatively and physically.
  • Throughout the year, students showcase their talents through an annual art show, music performances, and active celebrations such as Run with Timber and Field Day.

These specials enrich learning, build school spirit, and allow every child to shine in different ways.

Colorado Standards

The Colorado Standards provide a road map that all Colorado educators and students can follow to ensure student success at each grade level. Below are links to the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) website to assist you in understanding and supporting your child through their educational journey with these state standards.   More about Colorado Academic Standards

School Advisory Council (SAC)

The School Advisory Council (SAC) is a state-mandated committee of parents and patrons that works with High Plains administration in such areas as goal setting and review, testing results and budget issues.   More about the School Advisory Council.

Social Emotional Learning

Research shows that students with stronger social emotional skills are better prepared to focus, learn, and do their best in school. We have adopted RULER, a program developed by the Center for Emotional Intelligence at Yale University, to teach these skills to students of all grade levels.  More About RULER.
